Drift Away Portable White Noise Machine

What is white noise and why do you need white noise for sleep?

White noise is a sound made by evenly combining all the audible frequencies humans can hear at an equal intensity to create a steady noise with no specific pitch. This can sound like a fuzzy, humming, static-like or hissing like noise. White noise can be helpful by masking other sound and noises in the sleep environment that may be distracting or disruptive for a person going to sleep, and staying asleep. For infants, white, pink or brown noise can also act as a sleep cue for your baby, and calm and soothe baby through familiar sounds.

When used safely, white noise is suitable to use from birth for a baby as one part of your sleep settling toolkit.

Your baby's sleep routine - setting up a consistent routine from day one

The word’s ‘routine’ and ‘newborn baby’ can seem incongruous. In the early days of your baby being earthside, the goal is to learn their tired signs and establish connection rather than a typical sleep routine. With that in mind, there are a few things that can set up healthy sleep habits, positive sleep associations and help parents feel empowered they are making safe sleep choices for their babe. Introducing white noise, using a darkened room for sleeps, and using a safe-sleep swaddle for all naps are three such ways.
Once your baby is around 2/3 months old, their internal clock becomes more predictable and a basic sleep/eat/play schedule can be introduced. Our range of newborn sleepwear below is designed to meet the developmental sleep needs of the early newborn days, to the transition to rolling and infanthood.

FAQs for using White Noise and Drift Away

What is White Noise and who is it for?

White noise is a sound made by evenly combining all the audible frequencies humans can hear at an equal intensity to create a steady noise with no specific pitch. White noise can be helpful by acting as a sleep cue, and masking noises in the sleep environment that may be distracting or disruptive for a person going to sleep, and staying asleep. All ages can benefit from white, pink or brown noise for sleep, but it can be particularly helpful for a newborn baby and supporting the transition from womb to world. This is because the presence of white noise mimics the way your baby hears noises in the womb and therefore acts as both a soothing noise and sleep cue, in addition to muffling loud, interruptive noises at sleep time. Remember that all babies sleep differently. You may find your baby responds positively to white noise, and it acts as a calming and positive sleep cue and tool for your child. However, not all babies will enjoy or need white noise for sleep, and that’s OK too.

Is it safe?

White noise is a completely safe sleep tool to incorporate into you or your baby’s sleep routine when used correctly. As a rule of thumb, the sound should never be higher than conversation level, or 65db. The Drift Away unit at its highest volume setting will play at 65db when used 50cm from baby’s head, or 50db as recommended by the AAP when 2 metres away from baby’s head. We recommend turning off the noise after your baby has achieved their first sleep cycle transition, around 1 hour after falling asleep. If you are using the Drift Away in an enclosed space such as a car, be mindful to turn the volume down to conversation level. Never place a white noise machine in a baby’s direct sleep environment (such as a bassinet, crib or co-sleeper) where it can cause a suffocation or health hazard.

How do I know if I should try white noise for my baby?

If other self-settling and soothing techniques aren’t working, you may choose to introduce white noise at settling time to see if your baby responds positively to it.

When can I start using white noise?

Drift Away is safe to use from birth, or before! You may find the sounds soothing during labor, and the presence comforting to your babe as they enter the world.

Do I use white noise for EVERY sleep?

That’s up to you and your child. In the early days and months, white noise at every sleep will help provide a positive sleep cue and association both at home, and also when you are sleeping on the go and out of the usual sleep environment.. As your baby grows, you may wish to gradually begin weaning off the white noise for every sleep, to help lessen the chance of it becoming a sleep crutch, and as they develop their own self-settling techniques.

Is Drift Away only for use on the go?

No. Drift Away is designed to use wherever you/your baby is sleeping. This could be at home, in the car, at a hotel, at the grandparents house or attached to the stroller. If you have an at-home white noise machine already and are looking for a portable one, Drift Away is happy to fill that role too.

Can adults use White Noise?

Absolutely. Many adults who are shift workers, sleeping outside a normal circadian rhythm or have difficulties sleeping due to insomnia, anxiety, tinnitus or are simply a ‘light sleeper’ may benefit. The Drift Away contains pink noise sounds such as Rain, Ocean, and Nature that adults may find more effective for sleep than white noise. These sounds are even in pitch, but the lower frequencies are amplified while the higher frequencies and reduced. These kinds of sounds are generally more pleasant and soothing to adult brains.

When do I stop using White Noise, and why?

Around 8-12 months of age, your baby may not need white noise to help with sleep. You can wean your baby off white noise by introducing other sleep tools and cues such as a comforter.

What is the battery life of Drift Away?

Drift Away boasts 48 hours continuous playback time on a single charge. That means if you were to playback Drift Away for an average of 8 hours a day, a single charge would last you up to 6 days. An orange light will indicate the battery needs to be charged, and will also show while charging. Drift Away takes around 2 hours to charge from empty to full battery. We recommend running the battery down completely before charging again. Rechargeable polymer-lithium batteries naturally diminish maximum charging capacity over time. This is expected to happen over several years. You can help preserve the life of a battery by not exposing it to heat sources and not charging erratically.

Can I play it when it's plugged in?

Yes, the Drift Away unit is safe to play while charging.

Can I take Drift Away on an airplane?

Yes. The Drift Away contains a polymer-lithium rechargeable battery with 1.85Wh, which will be accepted by most airlines in both checked baggage, or carry on. Please check with your airline before flying.

How close can I use white noise to my baby?

Whether playing it for yourself or baby, the sound should never be higher than conversation level, or 65db. The Drift Away unit at its highest volume setting will play at 65db when used 50cm from baby’s head, or 50db as recommended by both ergoPouch and the American Academy of Paediatrics when 2 metres away from baby’s head. We recommend turning off the noise after your baby has achieved their first sleep cycle transition, around 1 hour after falling asleep. .

How do I know if I should try white noise for my baby?

If other self-settling and soothing techniques aren’t working, you may choose to introduce white noise at settling time to see if your baby responds positively to it.

Do I leave the sound on through baby's sleep?

For a baby, we recommend the sound is turned off after their first successful REM cycle transition, or around 1 hour after they fall asleep. This will help prevent the overuse of noise becoming a sleep crutch, and prevent any issues constant sound may present to a baby’s developing auditory processing systems.

Do I turn the light on for sleep?

No, we recommend total darkness for sleep. The light function is useful as a soft light at night during overnight diaper changes for your baby, to help you find a lost pacifier or comforter, or to waken baby enough for an overnight feed without shining a bright light in their eyes.

Why do I need a machine instead of Spotify or an app?

If you’re finding interruptive ads or flat device batteries are an annoying side effect of listening to white noise on your phone or table, you’re not alone. The Drift Away provides the convenience and portability of white noise, without the frustrating challenges.

How does a White Noise machine fit into the ergoPouch sleepwear range?

The Drift Away Portable White Noise machine fits seamlessly into our lineup of Newborn Sleep Essentials, and your sleep toolkit. Drift Away complements our sleepwear range in that is designed to act as a positive sleep cue, is safe for baby sleep from birth and has form as good as its function.

How does Drift Away differ from other White Noise machines?

We wanted to introduce a product to families that solved sleep challenges, without the unnecessary bells and whistles. The Drift Away does away with things like humidifiers, rainbow lights, alarms in favor of safety, clear and quality sounds and portability; the three things parents told us were their main concerns. Unlike other models on the market Drift Away offers true portability with 48 hours continuous playback, a compact and lightweight body (96g/0.2lb and 8cm/5” diameter) and an adjustable strap made of food-grade silicone.
