How to use the Sleep Sack

Learn how to use the Jersey Sleep Sack for safe infant sleeping

Our Jersey Sleep Sack is a baby and toddler sleep sack designed for arms out sleepers (usually from around 3 months of age). The Jersey Sleep Sack has a slim-fit, stretchy design similar to that of a swaddle and is recommended as baby's 'first sleep sack' after the swaddling phase is over. The stretchy material allows your child to move more freely and stay comfortable while they sleep.

Lay the Sleep Sack on a flat surface with zip open.

Lay your child on top of the Sleep Sack. Put your child's arms through the sleeves and tuck their legs into the Sleep Sack.

To change a diaper or to cool down your child, unzip from the bottom of the sack to release legs and lower torso. Re-fasten zip.

Always sleep your baby in a safe sleep environment. A loose blanket is not required when using this product.

Let’s check the fit!

An important safety element when using a Sleep Sack is to ensure it’s correctly fitted to prevent the product from riding up around your child’s face. Here’s how you can check you’ve got the right size.

  1. Check you have the correct size according to your child’s weight using our Size Guide.
  2. Put the Sleep Sack on your child.
  3. Slip two fingers into the neckhole of the Sleep Sack, and onto your child’s chest. The material should feel firm and comfortable on your fingers, but not tight.
  4. Check your child’s hips and legs. Your child’s knees should be able to flop outwards in a frog like position without any restriction.

Understanding TOG ratings

Your Sleep Sack comes with a TOG rating. TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade and is a unit of measurement for insulation and warmth of sleepwear and bedding. Put simply, the lower the TOG rating the lighter the fabric. The higher the rating, the more padded and insulated it is for warmth. TOG rated fabrics are important as your baby cannot regulate their temperature like adults can.

Included in your pouch packaging is a Room Thermometer and Dressing Guide. Simply read the thermometer to find the room temperature of your child’s sleep environment, then follow the Dressing Guide on the front of the thermometer. The guide will inform how to layer your child for sleep based on the TOG rating of your pouch, and the temperature of your room. Simple, smart and sanity-saving!

Understanding TOG ratings

Extend the life of your Sleep Sack

All ergoPouch pouches are double-stitched and dyed with a non-toxic water-based dye, and certified to be free from formaldehyde, phthalates and lead. Cared for properly, this product will last several years and can be used for more than one baby. Our TOGs don't lose their warmth ratings over time, but a gentle fluff up in the dryer on a low setting helps maintain the fibers loft, allowing air to circulate through more effectively.

If you've received a second-hand Sleep Sack, check for loose threads, stable zips and any stretch around the neck before using. Contact our Customer Service team if you're unsure if you have received the correct size for your baby's weight.

FAQs for using the Sleep Sack

What age does my child need to be to fit the Sleep Sacks?
The Jersey Sleep Sack can be used from around 3 months old, or over 6kg. They are not suitable for newborn babies. Please buy the appropriate size for your child’s weight (see our Size Guide for more information).

Why don't the lower TOGs have sleeves on the Sleep Sacks?
Your baby regulates their body temperature through their arms when sleeping. In warmer rooms, your babies arms should remain uncovered to help them stay cool and prevent overheating. In cooler rooms where the temperature is below 66°F, the use of a light sleeve can help your child stay warm during sleep. Therefore, only our 3.5 TOG pouches have a sleeve with a 1.0 TOG rating, suitable for room temperatures of 57°F-69°F.

Does my child need sleeves on their sleep sack to be warm?
No. Only in cooler rooms would we recommend a sleeve on a sleep sack. In rooms 66°F and above, a warm layer underneath your child's sleeveless sleep sack will be enough to keep them warm during sleep. Remember, it is normal for your child's hands to feel cold during sleep. As long as the nape of their neck and chest is warm and dry to touch, they will be comfortable.

Do I use blankets on top of the Sleep Sack?
Our Sleep Sacks are TOG rated meaning they have an insulation grade making them warm enough to use for sleep without loose bedding and are designed to replace blankets. It is recommended by safe sleep guidelines to sleep your child with their face and head uncovered in their crib, free from loose bedding, pillows and toys.

What should my child wear under a Sleep Sack?
This will vary from a diaper (or underwear for toilet-trained toddlers), through to bodywear or a warm Romper (onesie or pajamas) depending on the room temperature. Follow our Room Thermometer and Dressing Guide (included in your packaging) to layer appropriately underneath, according to your room temperature and what TOG pouch you use. ergoPouch's under Rompers are also TOG rated to help make dressing for sleep easy.

How many Sleep Sacks do I need?
We recommend two lighter TOG sleep sacks, and two warmer TOG sleep sacks to see you through day and night sleeping. Having two in each TOG provides one for wear if one is in the wash.

When should I stop using Sleep Sacks?
This is a personal choice. You may find your toddler is ready to transition from a Sleep Sack to a Sleep Suit Sack or Sleep Onesie once they start walking and want more leg freedom in the crib. However, many children continue to wear a Sleep Sack right up until they transition to a big bed with blankets (not before 2 years of age). Once your child is comfortable with blankets, they can stop using their pouch. Our customers tell us this usually happens anytime between 2.5–4 years of age.
